Faith And Fortune: Art Across the Global Spanish Empire at the Art Gallery of Ontario

The Art Gallery of Ontario presents Faith and Fortune: Art Across the Global Spanish Empire. This exhibition runs through Oct. 10, 2022. It includes more than 200 works of art from the Spanish Empire, including Spain, Latin America, and the Philippines. The show, which covers 1492 to 1898, comes from the collection of New York’s Hispanic Society Museum & Library.

According to the museum, this exhibition “allows us to study critically the mechanics of colonization by examining the visual culture of the Spanish Empire.” Art from this culture spread through the region through artists, patrons and books. The works include beautiful paintings, sculptures, textiles, and books arranged to show the connections of the different media.

Visitors to Faith and Fortune: Art Across the Global Spanish Empire will have the opportunity to discover the worldwide, cross-cultural travel of people and art spanning the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. The exhibition begins with Columbus’s arrival in the Americas. It provides insights into the products of colonialization, including removing resources, missionaries and the spread of Christianity, and resistance to conquest by the indigenous population.

The museum’s website features an audio guide where visitors can listen to staff members talk about the important artworks in Faith and Fortune: Art Across the Global Spanish Empire. A transcript is also available.
